I’ve been seeing this question a lot on social media. I don’t like the idea of doing away with family’s traditions, especially in Black families, because, to me, they’ve generally speaking been a way to keep genealogy and family history alive and well.
However, most of the responses I’ve seen online don’t actually refer to traditions, but rather practices, so I’ll answer in that regard.
For me, that practice would be in regard to being intentional concerning my mental well-being. I understand that my parents didn’t have that luxury. While they worked hard to give us a better life in terms of access and care, I still suffered mentally in different ways. So whenever I have children, I want to make sure I don’t carry any generational trauma into their lives.
As for generational traditions, I plan to continue as many of those as I can.
